The Shenyang J-16 is a new Chinese Su-27/33 variation, it was developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation as a Multirole aircraft. It was based on the J-11BS but with enhanced range and upgraded avionics, for example an AESA radar, and it is still in testing phase.
The new aircraft can be called an upgraded variant of the Russian made Su-30MKK. The aircraft is called "Silent Flanker", beacuse it will be somewhat stealthy due to the use of Radar Absorbing Material. Though the J-16 has a similar configuration like the American F-15E/F Strike Eagle, it can be called its Chinese counterpart. The date of its first flight is unknown to public, but it is rumoured that it took place between 2011 and 2012. It is expected to enter service between 2015 and 2016.
Actually there aren´t many optical differences to its predecessors J-11 and the naval variant J-15, only the two vertical stabilizators are slightly different. The Air-to-Air armament of the aircraft is expected to be mainly composed of PL-8 and PL-12 missiles, while its air-to-ground weapons are identical to the JH-7A, but the J-16 is more advanced than the JH-7 because of its greater payload, range and avionic capabilities.
