In 1937 Messerschmitt started development for a successor for the Bf 110, the result was the Me 210, which, however was cancelled due to massive issues and problems, after 263 aircraft. Originally, it was planned to build up to 1000 aircraft. So Messerschmitt decided to fix these problems, the new, fixed aircraft was named Me 410 and had a lenthened fuselage, new leading edge slats and it was equipped with new DB 603A engines.
The first aircraft entered service in January 1943. Until September 1944, 1,189 aircraft were built.
