Patriot missile launch b
The MIM-104 Patriot (usually used as an acronym for: Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept On Target) is a ground-based, medium range surface-to-air missile system, designed to engage hostile aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.

HistoryEdit

The system was developed in the 1960s, under a joint venture by Lockheed and Raytheon, at this time it was designated “SAM-D”. The Soviet equivalent to the Patriot was the SA-10 Grumble, at this time, but currently the more advanced Russian SA-20 Gargoyle is considered the most direct counterpart. It was renamed to MIM-104 Patriot in 1976. Development began in the year 1976 and deployment took place in 1984.

Besides its main user, the United States, the Patriot system is also used by countries like Egypt, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Israel, Japan, Taiwan, Spain and others.
