X-27 mockup
The Lockheed X-27 was an experimental fighter prototype developed as the basis for an F-104 Starfighter replacement.[1]It was a direct competitor to the Northtrop F-5E Tiger, Dassault Mirage F1, Grumman YF-17 Cobra and the F-4 Phantom II. The X-27 wasn´t supported by the United States Air Force, and cancelled due to high cost.

Development of the X-27 began in mid 1961, when Clarence L. 'Kelly' Johnson, head of Lockheed's advanced development projects office, initiated an in-house study to create an improved, yet relatively unchanged, long term replacement for the F-104 Starfighter. This eventually led to the CL-1200, the design of which was frozen in 1971. [2]
