The Focke Wulf Triebflügel (meaning "trust wing"), was a radical German design for an aircraft in 1944, during
the end of World War 2. The VTOL design concept was being tested in wind tunnels before the allies captured the production facilities.

The idea was simple in theory, but complicated in application: have an aircraft that can be used to intercept bombers without needing a runway to take off or land.
The answer was to make an aircraft without wings, but have a rotor-thrust design. The wings were replaced by three giant rotor blades that would spin around the aircraft body. Jet engines would be used to get enough thrust to lift the aircraft.
