The F/A-18

The Boeing F/A-18 Hornet is a twin-engine, all-weather, carrier-based multirole fighter. It has the ability to dogfight and to attack ground targets. It was derived from the YF-17 in the 1970s for the US Navy and the US Marine Corps, because the F-16 with one engine was not powerful enough and not viable for carrier service. The Hornet is able to carry a wide variety of missiles and bombs what makes it very versitale. The Hornet was first deployed in Operation El Dorado Canyon against Libya and has since participated in almost all engagements involving the United States Navy. In the 1990s, Boeing developed a larger, more advanced variant, the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, which was much larger and featured new engines, new avionics, and new weapons systems. These modifications resulted in an almost entirely new aircraft of about the same size as the Air Force's F-15 Eagle.
