Aerostats are a type of aircraft that rely on buoyancy created by a liftgas predominantly for their lift characteristics. The liftgas is typically hydrogen, helium or hot air. There are two major types of aerostats, the airships (such as blimps and zeppelins) and the balloons. Airships are propelled through propulsion systems, while balloons are borne on the wind.
